As mentioned, – and I probably will sneak it in every conversation – was ik op uitwisseling naar New York. But anyway, bij het opstellen van je profiel had je de optie om enkele vragen te plaatsen op je profiel om het ijs te breken. Since my passion for music runs deep, had ik de vraag “Timbaland or The Neptunes?” als eerste staan. Waarom deze vraag? As mentioned in pretty much every article, ben ik mainly opgegroeid met deze superproducers and they both are in my top three producers, next to Kanye West of course. Y’all know my love for Kanye West runs deep – if not check this article where I explain my complicated relationship with Mr. West. However, Timbaland en The Neptunes hebben altijd een gedeelde tweede plek gehad. Dus, na vele gesprekken, documentaires, crate digging en felle discussies met mijn broer, denk ik dat ik het antwoord heb op de eeuwenoude vraag: wie is de betere producer Timbaland of The Neptunes?

Dit artikel maakt deel uit van een nieuw segment, IMANI BEPAALT. Hier bepaal ik wat of wie het beste is in alles wat te maken heeft met hiphop. Denk beste album, beste rapper, beste boek, beste documentaire etc. Alles is mogelijk. Deze IMANI BEPAALT is going to settle once and for all who is the better producer. Dit doe ik in drie delen. In het eerste deel, dit deel, zal ik het uitvoerig hebben over Timbaland en zijn repertoire. In deel twee zal ik het hebben over The Neptunes. In het laatste deel zal ik de twee tegenover elkaar zetten en uiteindelijk de vraag beantwoorden.

DISCOGRAPHY
Best produced album: Justin Timberlake – FutureSex/LoveSounds
Het is niet alleen het beste album dat Timbaland heeft geproduceerd, maar ook de op één na beste album van Justin Timberlake. The funny thing is, zijn beste album – Justified – is ook deels geproduceerd door Timbaland. Omdat de productie van Justified merendeels in handen is van The Neptunes, heb ik ‘m niet op de eerste plek. Timbaland heeft zonder twijfel een grote rol gespeeld in Justin Timberlake’s switch van *NSYNC heartthrob naar R&B’s favorite white boy – he lost that title when he dropped that wack ass Man of the Woods. Mijn broer is the biggest Justin Timberlake fan I know, dit album werd grijsgedraaid. Geen enkele track werd geskipt. I understand why. Elke track klopt. Je hoort hevige invloeden uit disco, hiphop en funk. Showing you how Timbaland is able to make everything sound good, no matter the genre. Dit in combinatie with JT’s velvet voice? YES. These two are a dynamic duo en ook op dit album hoor je die chemie.

Honorable mentions: Missy Elliott – Supa Dupa Fly en Aaliyah – One In A Million

Best produced song: Jay Z – Dirt Off Your Shoulder
You can’t do nothing but to make that nasty face and bop your head when you hear this beat. Dit vereist geen uitleg, dit spreekt voor zich. Now I’m about to say something mad controversial: I find Jay-Z a little overrated. Ik vind dat hij altijd de beste beats weet te strikken en hij laat zich vervolgens dragen door ze, if you get what I mean? Dit is een voorbeeld hiervan. Als deze track was uitgebracht als slechts een instrumental, I’d be totally fine with it. I can do without Jay-Z. This, however, is a topic for another time. I do appreciate the fact that he said that “Ladies is pimps too”, though.

Honorable mentions: Tweet – Oops (Oh My), Timbaland & Magoo – Indian Flute, Ginuwine – Pony, Jay-Z – Big Pimpin’, Timbaland feat. Justin Timberlake, Missy Elliott & Dr. Dre – Bounce, Aaliyah – Are You That Somebody?

IMPACT
You’re not going to tell me that Timbaland’s impact wasn’t major. He is one of the pioneers when it comes to those distorted sounds in R&B and hiphop. Denk aan die burp sound op “Pony” of dat baby geluid op “Are You That Somebody?” ICONIC. Het verwerken van zijn talent in beatboxen in zijn productie is also a reason to love him. I can appreciate an authentic, multifaceted producer. Your favorite producer could never. Daarnaast is hij een sleutelfiguur in het succes van heel wat artiesten: Justin Timberlake, Aaliyah, Missy Elliott, Ginuwine en Nelly Furtado. Just to name a few. He doesn’t have the title superproducer for no reason. Often imitated, never duplicated. It’s crazy, naar mijn idee ontvangt hij niet genoeg props als ik kijk naar de huidige/nieuwe stroming producers. Meanwhile, is Timbaland de vader van jouw favoriete producer. Hou op met me.

CONSISTENCY
Als we het hebben over consistentie is Timbaland wel een prime example. Producing bangers back to back. Once again, that’s why he’s a superproducer. Alles was op niveau, consistently dropping quality work. Het feit dat hij kwalitatief sterk materiaal kan produceren met artiesten uit verschillende genres is een skill. A skill not many producers possess.

VERSATILITY
Van EDM tot Indiase invloeden. VERSATILE AF, WHAT YOU MEAN?! Het feit dat je in elke productie van Timbaland toch zijn sound hoort doorsijpelen, laat zien dat hij elke genre weet te domineren en naar zijn hand te zetten. At one point everybody and their momma was singing OneRepublic’s “Apologize” of “If We Ever Meet Again” met Katy Perry. Dan heb ik het nog niet eens gehad over zijn samenwerking met Nelly Furtado. How you got a ten-year-old girl singing about being promiscuous? That was an era, man.

LONGEVITY
I ain’t even going to lie, I think Timbaland is past his prime. Als we kijken naar zijn discografie zijn Timbo’s producties tijdloos. Still bumping his productions for all the artists mentioned previously and will do so until the end of time. His productions will stand the test of time, zonder twijfel. Kijkend naar zijn producties van de laatste twee jaar… welke producties? Exactly. Deze zijn niet noemenswaardig. Ik zie Timbaland nu alleen nog maar voorbijkomen op mijn explore page. He had a good run though. Omdat zijn legacy zo major is, kan hij zich dit veroorloven.
