Kamaiyah aka Lil Yaya. The self-proclaimed queen of the west coast heeft haar debuutalbum Got It Made gedropt. As I am using my platform to highlight, amongst other things, women in hiphop, yours truly gave it a listen.
In “Intro” wordt de toon al gezet. Er is een duidelijk contrast hoorbaar. Ze heeft over de roem en faam en hoe het haar niet heeft veranderd since she “still drink champagne with my chicken strips”. Een paar regels later she is sure to let us know that “I ain’t the type you could shit on / ‘Cause if you try that shit, you know which way this shit could go“. Basically, saying that while she’s humble, she still ain’t afraid to pop when needed.

Dit thema, succes en het effect op Kamaiyah, is ook te horen op de tracks “Pressure” – my personal fave – “Whatever Whenever” en “Still I Am”. Bij haar succes hoort ook het feit dat ze haar eigen label heeft gelanceerd GRND.WRK waar ze ook haar debuutalbum heeft gedropt. She ain’t shy of mentioning that throughout her album. I ain’t even mad at her, it’s a big deal – she Got It Made.
MOOD SWINGS
However, en hier gaat een mis, is niet het volledige album in lijn met the main message – having it made. Kamaiyah heeft tracks die misplaatst voelen met thema’s zoals seks, bad relationships – the term ‘toxic’ is more fitting here, but I’m tired of that term. “Get Ratchet”, “1-800-IM-HORNY” en “Digits” zijn hier een voorbeelden van.

“This shit is toxic by far / ‘Cause we’ll be back good by tomorrow”
Deze agressie komt ook terug in de track “Set It Up”, hier bijstaan door Trina. Which is basically a more aggressive version of Jazmine Sullivan’s “Bust Your Windows” over a West Coast beat. Op zichzelf zijn deze nummers sterk – maar in dit project voelen ze meer als een onderbreking dan een toevoeging.
The ironic part is dat ze een nummer genaamd “Mood Swings” heeft, which would actually be a more fitting title for this album. Ook dit nummer is in lijn met het thema van gefaalde relaties.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Alle nummers zijn catchy, maar vrij kort.Het album zelf duurt met tien nummers nog geen dertig minuten. Not necessarily a bad thing. Lyrisch qua voorspelbaar. Als we luisteren naar de beats, hoor je vrij weinig verschil. Allemaal met een West Coast sausje. Guest appearances van Trina en Too $hort zijn de enige highlights op “Got It Made”. Sinds dit haar debuutalbum is, had ik meer verwacht. Knowing dat ze bangers zoals “How Does It Feel”, “Fuck It Up” en “Windows” op d’r naam heeft staan. Oh well, I’m still gonna bump it though.
